The 90/10 Principle

I believe you know or heard of the 80-20 rule or Pareto's Principle. It states that a small number of causes (20%) is responsible for a large percentage (80%) of the effect, for example, 20% of the customers generate 80% of the sales, or that 80% of merchandise comes from 20% of the vendors.

Have you read this before?

The 90/10 Principle

Author : Stephen Covey ( Management Guru)

Discover the 90/10 Principle. It will change your life (at least the way you react to situations). What is this principle? 10% of life is made up of what happens to you. 90% of life is decided by how you react. What does this mean?

We really have no control over 10% of what happens to us. We cannot stop the car from breaking down. The plane will be later arriving, which throws our whole schedule off. A driver may cut us off in traffic. We have no control over this 10%. The other 90% is different. You determine the other 90%. How?

By your reaction. You cannot control a red light, but you can control your reaction. Don't let people fool you; YOU can control how you react.

Let's use an example.

You are eating breakfast with your family. Your daughter knocks over a cup of coffee onto your business shirt. You have no control over what just what happened. What happens when the next will be determined by how you react. You curse. You harshly scold your daughter for knocking the cup over. She breaks down in tears. After scolding her, you turn to your spouse and criticize her for placing the cup too close to the edge of the table. A short verbal battle follows. You storm upstairs and change your shirt. Back downstairs, you find your daughter has been too busy crying to finish breakfast and get ready for school. She misses the bus. Your spouse must leave immediately for work. You rush to the car and drive your daughter to school. Because you are late, you drive 40 miles an hour in a 30 mph speed limit. After a 15-minute delay and throwing $60 traffic fine away, you arrive at school. Your daughter runs into the building without saying goodbye. After arriving at the office 20 minutes late, you find you forgot your briefcase. Your day has started terrible. As it continues, it seems to get worse and worse. You look forward to coming home, When you arrive home, you find small wedge in your relationship with your spouse and daughter.

Why?

Because of how you reacted in the morning. Why did you have a bad day?
A) Did the coffee cause it?
B) Did your daughter cause it?
C) Did the policeman cause it?
D) Did you cause it?

The answer is " D".

You had no control over what happened with the coffee.

How you reacted in those 5 seconds is what caused your bad day.

Here is what could have and should have happened.

Coffee splashes over you. Your daughter is about to cry. You gently say, "It's ok honey, you just need, to be more careful next time". Grabbing a towel you rush upstairs. After grabbing a new shirt and your briefcase, you come back down in time to look through the window and see your child getting on the bus. She turns and waves. You arrive 5 minutes early and cheerfully greet the staff. Your boss comments on how good the day you are having.

Notice the difference?

Two different scenarios. Both started the same. Both ended different. Why?

Because of how you REACTED.

You really do not have any control over 10% of what happens. The other 90% was determined by your reaction.

Here are some ways to apply the 90/10 principle.

If someone says something negative about you, don't be a sponge.Let the attack roll off like water on glass. You don't have to let the negative comment affect you! React properly and it will not ruin your day. A wrong reaction could result in losing a friend, being fired, getting stressed out etc.

How do you react if someone cuts you off in traffic? Do you lose your temper? Pound on the steering wheel? A friend of mine had the steering wheel fall off) Do you curse? Does your blood pressure skyrocket? Do you try and bump them? WHO CARES if you arrive ten seconds later at work? Why let the cars ruin your drive? Remember the 90/10 principle, and do not worry about it.

You are told you lost your job. Why lose sleep and get irritated? It will work out. Use your worrying energy and time into finding another job. The plane is late; it is going to mangle your schedule for the day. Why take out your frustration on the flight attendant? She has no control over what is going on. Use your time to study, get to know the other passenger. Why get stressed out? It will just make things worse. Now you know the 90-10 principle. Apply it and you will be amazed at the results. You will lose nothing if you try it.

The 90-10 principle is incredible. Very few know and apply this principle. The result? Millions of people are suffering from undeserved stress, trials, problems and heartache. There never seem to be a success in life. Bad days follow bad days. Terrible things seem to be constantly happening. There is constant stress, lack of joy, and broken relationships. Worry consumes time. Anger breaks friendships and life seems dreary and is not enjoyed to the fullest. Friends are lost. Life is a bore and often seems cruel. Does this describe you? If so, do not be discouraged....

Rap: Back in the day of human creation
Little Miss Eve made a tasty temptation
Adam took a bite with a little hesitation
And so goes the story of human procreation
Who’s to say that my thoughts are so dirty
When I see a lady that’s oh so purdy!
What is a man without a little bit of evil
Oh my God can I be cured?

human experiment

was great to know that my bro is having a treat - vacation in Ipoh and Penang, for being the first place in class...See heres the deal that the adults made out of him. WHERE would he do better in school, at my mom's or dad's... after all, they r good at "pointing fingers" , apparently the reason of  he did poorly in school was becoz of too much fun during the weekend - at my mom's...

he's being accused, helplessly by those so called "elderly"-grandma,aunt,cousins and even my dad, for lying....for being rebellious by doing badly in school ON PURPOSE...

theres only so much a kid can take, he snapped at my dad one day after his "weekends" being blamed again for driving school work down stream :  "I THINK I can do better in school if i stay with mommy!" , dad replied: " Fine! u can now stay with mommy, see how well u'd do!", the very next day, his clothes were dropped of infront of my house.. 6 months trial, to see improvement...

with the help from both of my sisters, he showed improvement, He was so proud of himself when we talked on the phone, Im proud of him too! went to toy'r'us yesterday , picked up a spiderman study kit and a frisbee to reward him...although it make take too long to ship back, but he definately deserved them...I wish I could send a dingy back if shipping didnt cost so much...he would ve loved it! will definately bring one with me the next time i go back...

the best part is, when his grandma heard bout the good news, she didnt believe a word, Im really curious how will a kid turn out being brought up by these -- ppls!! Im feeling really sorry for my bro, for having to put up with all these bullshits....oh god, pls hv some mercy...

On n all, it was one of the best trip, best camp ground of the site we were told, so it was worth tat hour wait....it was by the river, woke up to the sound of river flow...jump in for swim anytime...wanted to go cliff diving, but too crowded.

while waiting for the last tenants to pack up, frisbee is good to kill time...

underground academic

been busy whole morning, besides work, finishing up thermo final was my main task of the day...and i did, guess the next step is to pay the fee...

Will had a "tutorial session" for the final , only me n shamek showed up, it was very helpful indeed, got most of the parts figured out esp question two.

Matter of fact is, I havent been completely honest with this final exam , collaborating with Will is one thing. But what I meant was, having notes n example from last year was the main the connection.

Its obvious that the test was formed from pieces of questions frm last year, or year b4...or even year b4...who knows how long these questions had existed...but what really puzzles me was : who is actually completely honest with this test? Well maybe I could be quite sure that no one is.....even though some of them might "look" like they r...guess is the matter of level of "dihonesty". say level 1=extremely dishonest; and 5= barely ,I will stand around 3. What about the rest? where do they stand?

I seriously dont feel good now even though this is over, infact im feeling aweful. After all, all I can say is correspondant study, self learning course is such a bad idea esp to technical course like tat, or at least to lazy ppl like me. I wouldnt want to do it again....

what the heck! im going camping tomorrow!!

I didnt know our take home final exam is due on the 22nd,which is next MONDAY! Will agreed to hv a meeting with us whos in town this sat to go through it , thank god! ohh yeaaaa u hv to be thankful after 7 hours of working on ONE question n still havent got it done...

argh!

anyway met up with the appraiser yesterday and final figure for the house is....still slightly more ex than we expected, but alot better than the first proposal... now that we ve moved steps ahead, the next essential one is " A WEDDING! " , I ve always dream of a nice romantic wedding, perhaps i will need help - wedding planner.

Had a gooooooooood breakfast, bacon&cheese omelette sandwich...after MONTHS! darling finally making breakfast again. Uncle Steve dropped by , he's taking off later to MALAYSIA~ ohhh lucky him, I gotto work harder and hopefully one day ill be able to take vacation whenever I like without hv to worry bout $$.

Today is Mom in law's birthday...Shout out to her: HAPPY BIRTHDAY MOM!

Lastly, my deepest condolence to Jeff's dad who passed away two days ago...sigh....come to think about it.....

another bbq nite : no pics taken though :P

sigh....i remembered two hours b4 the bbq started, i reminded myself to bring the camera out, but ended up forgotten bout it the entire nite.... anyway Butzu n shouri showed up n they introduced us the japanese style bbq GARLIC N ONION!!! pretty good actually esp the garlic :)

Nate showed up later, then Jenn..... and prezemek showed up looking like he just dealed with those thermo questions again.....then Finally Jim, Jazzie n Keith came, Keith bought a $600 guiter , an absolute beauty!

soooo throughout the nite, as usual..we ate, we drank, we played guitar n dance a lil....

here come the best part: Butzu washed all my dishes!!!! sooo nice of him!! never had any of my guests done tat b4.... I should invite him to dinner more often, hehe

Keith n gang took off to open mic nite, we were going to go too if Keith were to sing..but not! So 4 of us had a movie nite: the grudge. not as good as Ju On, but still scared the shit out of us... It was like a pyjamas party coz Butzu n Shouri had a sleep over after some snacks n whiskey.

sisterhood of the traveling pants

Was supposed to work on my correspondent take home final, even though Will said we could take our time but I wouldnt wanna risk it.

Just watched the "sisterhood of the traveling pants"for the second time, first time was in the theatre, it was so good that I decided to download it so I could watch it over n over again.

This story is about how a pair of jeans amazingly fits all Lena, Tibby , Carmen n bridget perfectly despite on their size differences. They decided to share it during the summer n called it the magic pants. In this unique way, the four experience the challenges and surprises of life in a summer they'll never forget.

TWO THUMBS UP!!

Lena, Tibby, Carmen, Bridget

Lena is a soft spoken n conservative girl ,who hide herself behind the image of everyone sees her since young - the image of appropriateness. During her stay with his grandparent in Greece, the magic pants brought her to this guy who made her open up , not afraid to be herself.

Tibby appeared to be this tough girl who doesnt care much , but deep down inside, shes just afraid of feeling too much. The pants brought Bailey to her (who suffer from leukeamia). The moment b4 Bailey died, Tibby put the pants besides her hoping that the magic will work on her,Bailey said to her : "they already did, they brought me to you.. ", tat was crying scene no.1, there were 3, even the second time I watch it..hehe

Bridget is this tall gorgeous blonde who spent her summer in a soccer camp in Mexico. Her mom died years ago, and she s been trying to keep herself happy n alive ever since, becoz she believes if she feels alive, it doesnt seem like she s dead. But whenever shes upset, missing her mom hurts her too much.

I could connect myself to Carmen the most(despite on our sizes n loud nature), the fact that she wouldnt stand up to her dad who she hasntseen much since he divorced her mother years ago, jealousy occurred seeing her dad as a happy family with his fiance n her two teen children, made her wonder what she has done wrong tat he left them. After such a long time, I found this anger inside against my father, I think the misunderstand between Karen n mom triggered it. Will I express myself to him like how Carmen did to her dad? I dunno, if it happens, it happens, is not like it meant anything to him anyway..A lot of times, im always curious about the feeling of growing up having loved from a father..even now so...

Haze conditions in homeland :(

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
Malaysia yesterday declared a state of emergency in Port Klang and Kuala Selangor as PSI readings shot past 500 and urged mosques to hold special prayers for rain as a pall of haze from Indonesian forest fires sent pollution levels shooting into the hazardous zone.

More than 300 fires burning in the forests of Sumatra - which is separated from Malaysia by the narrow Malacca Strait - have stoked the choking, acrid haze, which causes eyes to redden and leaves throats raspy

Under emergency rules, Port Klang, which has the country's biggest and busiest shipping harbor, will be shut down. All educational institutions and government and private workplaces will also be closed, including factories, construction sites and quarries.

However, supermarkets, shops selling food and drinks, pharmacies and essential services will remain open. Road work will be suspended and the use of personal motor vehicles will be discouraged.

I dont think it has ever been that bad, goshe i hv problem breathing just looking at those pics. But its really interesting  to know that mosques were urged to hold special prayers to call rain...ha!  is tat the least they could do? what bout human made rain?

I cant help but to think about the health conditions of public, esp my family, my bro n step dad are both asthma sufferes. PPL PLS!! WEAR MASKS! i know it looked hideous , but it helps filterning those filthy air!
